Sau gần 2 năm kể từ khi tiếp quản chuỗi nhà thuốc Long Châu, FPT Retail đã chính thức thành lập công ty FPT Long Châu.
Ngày 13/9, Hội đồng quản trị FPT Retail đã công bố nghị quyết về việc thành lập công ty con là Công ty cổ phần dược phẩm FPT Long Châu (viết tắt là FPT Pharma).
FPT Long Châu có vốn điều lệ 100 tỷ đồng, trụ sở đặt tại Quận 3 TPHCM với ngành nghề kinh doanh chính là Bán lẻ thuốc, dụng cụ y tế, mỹ phẩm và vật phẩm vệ sinh trong các cửa hàng chuyên doanh.
FPT Retail sẽ nắm 75% vốn của FPT Long Châu, tương đương giá trị 75 tỷ đồng. Người đại diện theo pháp luật của FPT Long Châu là bà Nguyễn Bạch Điệp, Chủ tịch của FPT Retail.
Thực tế, FPT Retail tiếp quản lại chuỗi nhà thuốc Long Châu từ tháng 1/2017. Trong khi đó, đối thủ của FPT Retail là Thế Giới Di Động gia nhập thị trường dược phẩm vào tháng 8/2017 với chuỗi nhà thuốc Phúc An Khang.
Theo nhận định của Công ty chứng khoán Rồng Việt, chuỗi nhà thuốc Long Châu đang có những bước đi hứa hẹn. Tuy nhiên, để thực sự trở thành động lực tăng trưởng của FPT Retail, Long Châu cần thành công trên diện rộng chứ không chỉ bó hẹp tại TPHCM.
Đây là điều không hề dễ dàng bởi trên thị trường dược phẩm hiện nay, kênh bệnh viện chiếm tới 70% thị phần, chỉ còn 30% doanh số thuốc bán lẻ dược phẩm, tương đương 1,6 tỷ USD được chia sẻ bởi khoảng 57.000 nhà thuốc và quầy thuốc trên cả nước.
Theo VDSC, kế hoạch mở 400 nhà thuốc vào 2021 của FPT Retail có phần tham vọng, khi ngay cả các chuỗi nhà thuốc đã thành công trên thế giới cũng phải mất một thời gian dài để đạt được cột mốc này. Việc tìm được các địa điểm phù hợp để nhân rộng thành công của các cửa hàng đầu tiên là không dễ dàng.
FPT Retail kỳ vọng Long Châu có thể chiếm 30% thị phần toàn thị trường, tức doanh thu 10.000 tỷ đồng và đóng góp 40% tỷ trọng doanh thu của FRT. Điều này đòi hỏi Long Châu phải thành công trong việc mở rộng ra nhiều khu vực. Tuy nhiên, phần đông người dân vẫn chưa quen với mô hình chuỗi, khiến cho nó mới chỉ phù hợp ở khu vực thành phố lớn như TPHCM và một số vùng lân cận, trong khi sẽ khó vươn xa tới địa bàn nông thôn, tỉnh lẻ. Vẫn cần một thời gian dài hơn để chuỗi nhà thuốc có thể trở thành một kênh chủ đạo.

Công ty con được thành lập mới là Công ty cổ phần Dược phẩm FPT Long Châu (viết tắt là FPT Pharma) với vốn điều lệ 100 tỷ đồng, trong đó FPT Retail góp 75% tương ứng 75 tỷ đồng.
FPT Pharma là doanh nghiệp chuyên bán lẻ thuốc, dụng cụ y tế, mỹ phẩm và vật phẩm vệ sinh trong các cửa hàng chuyên doanh.
FPT Retail cũng quyết định giao cho bà Nguyễn Bạch Điệp, Chủ tịch HĐQT công ty, làm đại diện toàn bộ số vốn góp của FPT Retail tại FPT Pharma. Bà Nguyễn Bạch Điệp cũng sẽ là người đại diện theo pháp luật của công ty mới thành lập Dược phẩm FPT Long Châu.
Năm 2017, FPT Retail bước chân vào lĩnh vực dược phẩm với việc mua lại chuỗi nhà thuốc Long Châu. FTP Retail dự kiến sẽ đưa tốc độ mở mới cửa hàng thuốc tương đương chuỗi bán lẻ điện thoại, với mức trung bình 100 cửa hàng/năm và đặt mục tiêu đến 2021 sở hữu 400 cửa hàng thuốc Long Châu.
Trong tương lai FPT Retail kỳ vọng chuỗi nhà thuốc Long Châu có thể chiếm 30% thị phần toàn thị trường, doanh thu ước khoảng 10.000 tỷ đồng và đóng góp 40% tỷ trọng doanh thu của FRT.
Trước mắt, theo kế hoạch, đến năm 2021 doanh thu lĩnh vực dược phẩm sẽ đóng góp 30 – 40% tổng doanh thu Công ty.
Kết thúc 6 tháng đầu năm 2018, doanh thu thuần FPT Retail đạt 7.480 tỷ đồng, tăng 18%; Lợi nhuận sau thuế 146,5 tỷ đồng, tăng 30% so với năm trước.
Đặc biệt, tăng trưởng của kênh online nhanh hơn tăng trưởng chung. Cụ thể, tăng trưởng 6 tháng đầu 2018 so với 6 tháng đầu 2017 là 21,31%.
Chính thức thành lập năm 2012, sau 6 năm hoạt động, FPT Retail hiện là nhà bán lẻ lớn thứ 2 tại Việt Nam trong ngành kỹ thuật số và hàng công nghệ với hệ thống 516 cửa hàng trên khắp 63 tỉnh thành (tính đến cuối tháng 6/2018). Như vậy, so với con số 473 cửa hàng của cuối năm 2017, riêng 6 tháng đầu năm nay, FPT Retail đã mở thêm được 43 cửa hàng mới.
Năm 2018, FPT Retail đặt kế hoạch tăng trưởngdoanh thu lên mức 16,020 tỉ đồng, tăng 22% so với cùng kỳ và lợi nhuận sau thuế lên mức 377 tỉ đồng, tăng 30% so với năm trước.
Với doanh số/m2 vượt trội so với các đối thủ trong top 10 nhà bán lẻ lớn nhất Việt Nam, cụ thể là 14.523 USD/m2, FPT Shop đã duy trì vị trí nhà bán lẻ hiệu quả nhất tính trên diện tích mặt sàn kinh doanh. Trước đó, FPT Shop cũng được công nhận là nhà bán lẻ hiệu quả nhất Việt Nam năm 2017.
Đối thủ của FPT Shop là Thế Giới Di Động có doanh số bình quân là 4.030 USD/m2, chưa bằng 1/3 so với FPT Shop.
Kết thúc năm 2017, FPT Shop đạt doanh thu 13.147 tỉ đồng, tăng 21% so với năm 2016. Lợi nhuận sau thuế đạt 290 tỉ đồng, tăng 40% so với năm 2016. Trong đó, doanh thu bán hàng trực tuyến đạt 2.034 tỉ đồng, tăng trưởng 68% so với năm 2016 và chiếm 15% tổng doanh thu của công ty.
Được biết, Top 500 nhà bán lẻ hàng đầu châu Á-Thái Bình Dương được xếp hạng dựa trên nghiên cứu, khảo sát kết quả kinh doanh hàng năm của các doanh nghiệp đến từ 14 quốc gia và vùng lãnh thổ (Australia, Trung Quốc, Hồng Kông, Ấn Độ, Indonesia, Nhật Bản, Hàn Quốc, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thái Lan, Đài Loan và Việt Nam) do Tập đoàn nghiên cứu thị trường uy tín Euromonitor International thực hiện.

Địa điểm nhận bảo hành uy tín

The business operation is forecast to continue to grow thanks to the large contribution from the monthly installment payment service by salary with interest free for customers who are employees of the enterprises associating with FPT Retail buying phones with network fee bonus.
For the first three months of the years, the revenue of the company reached 3.884 billion VND. The retail chain of FPT phones remained overwhelming in the revenue structure with over 97%, the other revenue came from the retail chain of Apple products. The net profit was up 33% compared to the same period last year, reached 64 billion VND.

By the end of 2017, FPT Shop had achieved the revenue of 13,147 billion VND, up 21.1% compared to 2016. The net profit was 289.8 billion VND, up 39.7% compared to 2016, in which the revenue of online sales was 2,034 billion VND, up 68% compared to 2016 and accounted for 15.47% of the total revenue of the company.

The representative of FPT Shop has the perspective: To keep the customers is not only the responsibility of each individual of the customer care service, but of all other departments of the company, even from the admin. For example, the products under warranty must be received and repaired at least one week (the % data of the products that is used to return to the customers is based on the date of the warranty center), in case the products are returned more than twice, FPT Retail must take the initiative to exchange the equivalent product for the customers.
“This may cause financial damage for FPT Retail but we are still determined to invest in such service to improve the quality”, said Mrs. Diep.
This is also the reason why FPT Retail has applied a large number of new technologies in the customer care service and eternal management. For instance, chatbot FPT.AI – this virtual assistant initially supports the employees in any positions to automatically look up any procedures, work instructions, sales policies, promotions, etc. which are already abundant and difficult to remember.
“Instead of clicking in each folder, then search in a bunch of folders the information relating to them, now, they just need to declare their location, position and insert the key words, the virtual assistant will help to find the information that they want very quickly”, the Chairman and General Director of FPT Retail explained.
Moreover, that can be seen in optimizing the sales, reducing the purchasing process of the customers from 30 minutes to 10 minutes with the Sales employees cum jobs of the accountant and the technical employee with the support of the sales supporting system mPOS.
This system allows the Sales employees to search for products, give advice on the products, compare the products and provide all the information related to the products such as price, promotion, configuration, etc. for the customers without having to remember hundreds of, thousands of models. Besides, this system also helps the sales procedures faster because it is paperless – the Sales employees just need to insert the buyer’s information into the app, the accountant can immediately send invoices and collect payment without re-typing.
Another technology that Mrs. Diep takes pride in FPT Retail is that the camera counting system helps to evaluate the interest level of the customers to each of the program, through which will help the Shop to modify promptly in order to increase the attraction, measure the volume of customers entering into the Shop at the same time. From that, there will be an optimal plan of resources and costs.
According to the latest report of Euromonitor, FPT Shop is the most effective retailer in Vietnam with the revenue on each m2 of the area at 15.717 USD/m2 whilst Mobile World, who has the highest revenue, has the revenue of only 5.076 USD/m2.
Calculating on the revenue that each employee has brought, FPT Shop has also surpassed the Mobile World. At the present, each employee of FPT Shop brings for the company the revenue of 2.2 billion VND. Meanwhile, with the number of over 36,000 employees, each employee of the Mobile World brings about 1.8 billion.

More than a year ago, the story of replacing the retail price of FPT Shop was put on the table to compare with the Mobile Word. While FPT Shop struggled with price lists on paper, the Mobile World took only 10 seconds with the electronic price lists. However, according to the latest Euromonitor report, FPT Shop is the most efficient retailer in Vietnam with the revenue per square meter of nearly 16,000USD/m2.
Mrs. Nguyen Bach Diep – the “female general” of FPT Digital Retail JSC (FPT Retail), which owns the retail chains FPT Shop – did not hide the story that FPT Shop had learned from “the brother” in retail business – Mobile World.
“They have been 8 years ahead of us. If we had to go from scratch, it would cost a lot. Standing on the perspective of principles, the shareholders do not wait for our bargain. The best way is to look at the leader and learn their good things to burn the stage without paying much, “said Mrs. Diep – The Chairman and CEO of FPT Retail shared.
However, there was one thing that FPT Shop did not choose to follow the brother: The procedures to change the retail price lists.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Tai – The Chairman and CEO of Mobile World Investment JSC (MWG) – was proud of a small thing but no other digital retailers could intimate through the past 10 years, which was to change the retail price lists.
Instead of printing the price lists on paper, the Mobile World used the electronic price lists. Every time the price was inserted into the Excel table, all the electronic price lists would change simultaneously by only clicking Enter.
FPT Shop did not select this option.
“Investing 20 billion VND in the price lists was quite a big amount of money for us at that time”
More than 3 years ago, replacing the price lists of FPT Shop was quite challenging.
“Before that, we sent a list of products whose price needed to be reduced and the employees would type it on the computer, then print, cut and replace the price. After that time, a part can be conducted automatically” Mrs. Diep said.
Such automation did not follow the way of Mobile World.
We did not deny the advantages of the electronic price lists when updating the temporary price and it can prevent the mistakes of human, but the investment in the electronic price lists like Mobile World, calculating, took approximately 20 billion VND.
“At that time, for us, 20 billion VND was quite a big amount of money. Meanwhile, we also found other solutions, procedures to replace the price and it also took 10 minutes. I thought that the situation was not so tense that we have to invest tens of billions VND in that electronic price lists”, Mrs. Diep told.
“Retail business is a tremendous industry and the innovations in business are abundant, and every year, we have a long list of many kinds of innovations in the earth to make”.
There was only one person in charge of replacing the price. After receiving the announcement of price replacement, this person just needed to get access into the software, choose the name of his/her shop, print on A4 paper and then replace the price.
The solution that Mrs. Diep mentioned was the process of replacing the price applied on the inventory data-based price-modifying system.
For instance, in order to change the price of the product Galaxy Note 8, after applying this product’s price on the software system, the system would base on the inventory quantity in the shops such as 3 products left in shop A, 2 products left in shop B, etc. in order to modify the price. All these tasks will be processed by the system in just a second. Normally, there were about 5 – 7 product whose price need to be replaced every day. The time for doing this is fixed after 10 pm, which is to avoid panic if the shops change the price during day time.
Although not using the system of electronic price lists, but with the strict process together with support from the company’s software, FPT Shop just spent only 10 minutes to modify the price every day.
Becoming the most efficient retailer in Vietnam thanked to the fact that Sales employees cum the work of the technicians and the accountants, each employee brings the avenue of 2,2 billion VND.
The story of improving the process of replacing the retail price, Mrs. Diep told it was just “a very small part” in a plenty of other improving stories in FPT Shop.
Retail business is a tremendous industry and the innovations in business are abundant. It is so abundant that FPT Corporation did not need to question, or deploy the competition, FPT Shop itself has “a long list of many kinds of innovation in the earth to make” every year.
“We have just been 5 years in the business, so the process needs to be more and more automatic, the more it is automatic, the less it depends on human, which can save costs and workforce”, the female general of FPT retail shared.
“Moreover, the rivals never stop. They also have new process and we still have further innovations to increase the competitiveness. That is the reason why we cannot stop. Our innovations are abundant and the story of replacing the price lists is just a very small part”.
One of the processes that is considered “big” in FPT Shop is the sales process.
The popular sales process in any phone shops and in FPT Shop previously is: The customers enter → The Sales employees welcome and give advice → The customers agree to take the products → The Sales employees write in a note and go to the warehouse to bring the products → The Sales employees take the products for the customers to check → The customers agrees and then make payment at the accounting counter → The products are brought to the technical counter to install → The customers leaves.

The whole process of buying and leaving of an average customer takes about 30 minutes.
With the improved process, our Sales employees have to work by themselves with the support tool of a smart phone installed the software to support sales.
The process as follows: The customers enter → The Sales employees welcome and give advice → The customers agree to take the products → The Sales employees use the smart phone to insert the customers’ information, select the product, click the print button for the invoice to be automatically printed, and collect payment from the customers at the same time and install basic software for the customers from available installed software of the Sales employees’ machine.
With the new process, the Sales employees will always cum the job of the technicians and accountants. The whole process of buying and leaving of a customer is reduced to 10 minutes.
“Only specifically hard software needs the technicians, but 70% of customers entering the shops just install the basic apps. With the new process, the customers has only “one stop”, everything is done very quickly. Changing the sales process is a dramatic change indeed”.
“These are mandatory changes and we save a lot of resources. In the past we had to have an accountant, a technician, with a full ‘bureaucracy’, but not now anymore. Retail business has to count little by little, to think many things to optimize, otherwise we cannot compete”, Mrs. Diep shared.
According to the latest Euromonitor report, FPT Shop has been the most efficient retailer in Vietnam with the revenue rate per square meter of 15,717USD/m2. Meanwhile, Mobile World with the highest sales but the revenue rate per square meter is only 5,076USD/m2.
According to calculation, the revenue that each employee has brought surpassed that of Mobile World. At the present, each employee of FPT Shop brings about 2,2 billion VND in revenue. Meanwhile, with the number of over 36,000 employees, each employee of Mobile World brings about 1.8 billion VND.
* Are you satisfied with the current result?
Mrs. Nguyen Bach Diep – The Chairman and General Director of FPT Retail: Well, I cannot say that we are good now. We are not actually. We still have many things to do. Mobile Work is very excellent, they have been ahead so they many much time to consider many options so they can optimize as much as possible. We can also learn from them a lot.
* Which technology that you take pride in the most in FPT Retail?
Honestly saying, technology is the thing that I have not been very much proud of. In principle, we should have done more things because FPT itself is a big corporation.
For instance, just facial recognition technology is a good thing. You enter our shop and we know who you are (if you have been here), our shop will run the electronic word like “Welcome Ms./Mr. X to our store”, or our employees will immediately place their hands on the chest and bow and say “Hello Ms./Mr. X”.
When the customers enter the shop, their name is called, their attitude will be different. Assuming you’ve just bought an iPhone, although there have been many customers entering but the employees know our name, what you have bought and also ask whether the iPhone that you have just bought runs well, whether you would like to buy the phone case because our store has just imported a lot of beautiful phone case.
In fact, FPT Shop has already had the technology, but the application has not been widespread. Now we install the App for the customers, when they return to FPT Shop, the App is open and the customer’s phone gets access to WiFi or Bluetooth, the “reading eye” of FPT Shop can connect and recognize the customer immediately when there are any regular customers entering and recognize their order history.
However, the problem is that the customers do not get access to Bluetooth or WiFi, so this App has not been really effective. We have many ideas but the technology also has limitation.

FPT Retail’s General Meeting of Shareholders: The ambition with the field of pharmacy, the target is to increase the number of Long Chau stores double in 2018 and in the next year, increase in 10 times.
After joining 1 year, until the beginning of 2018, the number of Long Chau stores was 10 units, this year, they expect to increase this number to 30, soon towards the target of 400 stores.
In 3 years time, the field of pharmacy will contribute 30-40% in the revenue
In 2017, many giant retailers such as Mobile World (MWG), Digiworld (DGW) và FPT Retail started to “engage” in the field of pharmacy with fast growth. However until now, when MWG said they do not hurry to deploy but they are only concentrating on Green Grocery, or DGW still have not had any rapid moves, FPT Retail has been revealing its big ambition in this field.
At the General Meeting of Shareholder at March 28, 2018, Mrs. Nguyen Bach Diep, the General Director at FPT Retail said that after 1 year joining, Long Chau chain’s drugstores have been doubled. Specifically, at the time when the Company started its investment in Long Chau, the chain of drugstores had only 5 stores, and after 1 year learning and developing the software system as well as taking over the supplies, FPT Retail had opened 5 more drugstores. Therefore, until the beginning of this year, Long Chau has reached 10 drugstores. It did not stop there, in 2018, the Company is planning to open 20 additional drugstores in HCMC area, and the number in the coming time is 100 stores/year.
Mrs. Diep also shared that the reason for them to select Long Chau chain when engaging in the field of pharmacy was that according to her observation, FPT Retail recognized that the number of its stores were more than others. Not to mention, the number of drugs in Long Chau was 6-7 times higher than that in others with the affordable price, therefore, there will be very few people take the Long Chau’s prescription to buy drugs in any other nearby drugstores. That led to the high revenue of Long Chau, and with 40% of the revenue from cosmetics, functional foods and medical equipment, it had helped the profitability of this chain outstanding compared to the general situation.
According to the plan, the revenue of the field of pharmacy will be calculated in the total revenue of FPT Retail since 2019, specifically, in 3 years, this field will contribute 30-40% in the Company’s total revenue.
FPT expects to make FPT Retail listed in HoSE before April 30, 2018
At the General Meeting, FPT Retail also submitted the business plan in 2018 with 16,200 billion VND in revenue – up 22% and 377 billion VND in net profit – up 30% compared to the result in 2017. With the above target, FPT Retail expects to divide in cash dividends of 20% and divide the bonus share with the ratio of 70%. With the current charter capital of 400 billion VND, it is predicted that after dividing the shares, the charter capital of the Company will increase to 680 billion VND.
According to the statistics, the business result of the first quarter of FPT Retail is still growing compared to the same period last year, to be specific: The revenue has increased 19% and the profit has increase 32%.
Answering this, Mrs. Diep share: “The profit margin is improved due to the Company’s cost optimization, specifically: to modify the working shifts of the employees during daytime, increase the shifts in rush hours and decrease when the customers are not crowded. Together with that, marketing costs are also being well managed by the Company”.
Additionally, Mrs. Diep said that her shares concerning the above situation were not inclusive of the revenue from the sales of the projects. If in total, the revenue in the first quarter of 2018 of the Company increased, the profit has been up 32% compared to the same period.
It is known that 2017 was the year that had many tremendous changes of FPT Retail concerning the ownership structures as well as the business results. The revenue of 2017 reached 13,147 billion VND, up 21% compared to 2016, the net revenue was up 40% to 290 billion VND. Besides that, in 2017, FPT Retail was massively deployed with the fact that FPT Retail reduced the ownership rate from 85% to 47%, bringing FPT Retail from its subsidiary to FPT’s associate company. The top two investment funds in Vietnam are Dragon Capital and VinaCapital which owns 20% and 15% respectively of FPT’s stocks.
Other noticeable news is that, FPT expects to make FPT Retail listed on HoSE before April 30, 2018 and the listing procedures have been submitted to HoSE. Regarding questions of the listing price of the shareholders, Mrs. Diep said that they could not public the listing price until that moment without the approval from HoSE.
FPT Retail also pushes the Apple Store when the retail market is saturated
Agreeing with the information that the mobile phone retail market has been saturated, Mrs. Diep said that that is the reason why along with three strategies to consolidate the existing retail business, FPT Retail’s new move is to extend the store chain of Apple Store. Specifically, the company is planning to open about 100 stores per year, expecting the number of stores will reach from 650 to 700 stores by 2020.
Currently, Apple Store is one of the chains belonging to F.Studio of FPT Retail. In particular, F.Studio is a store chain which is Apple’s official authorized retail chain in Vietnam, specializing in selling genuine Apple products, including the store at level 1 which is APR, level 2 which is AAR and level 3, CES. Until the beginning of this year, FPT Retail has reached 12 F.Studio stores.
In depth analysis of this strategy, the Company said Vietnam is the third market in Apple’s distribution channel, behind Thailand and Singapore. At the same time, with the growing market of Apple in Vietnam, while the volume of mobile purchases accounts for about 50% of the market, FPT Retail expects to attract the majority of customers concerning the purchase of genuine products in the future.
Until present, one of the competitive advantages of FPT Retail is to understand Apple and to meet its strict requirements of it (accounting for approximately 90% the total revenue of the mobile phone industry in the world). Therefore, with the two foreign companies, Gel and Thakral Brothers, FPT Retail has been selected by Apple to distribute the products.
In fact, this is not new to FPT Retail when in a meeting with the investors before that, the General Director has said: “If Mobile World (MWG) expands its business based on existing retail management by opening Green Grocery and Green Machine, FPT Retail is not an exception. And the Company has chosen Apple Store based on the strategy to continue exploiting Vietnamese market of Apple. Despite the low margins at the moment compared to other products, the high sales per product along with the accompanying product development strategy, the business in Apple products still have great potential growth”.

Today, at the annual General Meeting of FPT Retail, the General Director Nguyen Bach Diep has revealed the company’s determination in the investment in Long Chau drugstore chain.

Sharing at the event, Mrs. Diep said at the time of acquiring Long Chau last year, Long Chau had only 5 stores. After FPT’s acquisition, until the end of 2017, the number increased to 10 stores. This year, the company is planning to open 20 additional drugstores in Ho Chi Minh City.
Within 4 years from now, FPT Retail is planning to open 400 Long Chau drugstores.
Concerning the pharmacy market, Mrs. Diep said the scale of this industry is about 5 billion USD/year, which is nearly equal to the mobile phone industry and higher than the electrical industry. Meanwhile, the cost for pharmacy industry in Vietnam is still quite low compared to many other countries. In Vietnam, an average person only spends 30USD/year for pharmacy, compared to 46USD/year in Thailand, 142USD/year in Singapore. Especially, the field of pharmacy is up 13% per day and does not depend on the economic growth.
Mr.s Diep said, the revenue of Long Chau is higher than other chains according to the statistics that she has.
In the pharmacy market, there are not only drugstores?
“The pharmacy market is about 5 billion USD/year but the revenue from drugstores takes up only one third (about 1,3 billion USD/year) due to other distribution channels. And such figure, compared to that of mobile phones, is much lower. What are you hoping for the pharmacy market?”, an opinion raised in the event.
Mrs. Diep said large pharmacy market was about 5 billion USD and it came from 3 places. One third came from the hospital, one third came from the clinics and one third came from the drugstores. FPT Retail had been planning to approach the other two channels.
Concerning the drugstore channels, FPT Retail was hoping to take up 30% of the market share, which will not be lower than that of mobile phones. In 4 years, the field of pharmacy will contribute about 30-40% of the total revenue of the company.
The strategy of the field of pharmacy of FPT Retail is stronger than that of its rival – Mobile World. Accordingly, at the General Meeting of Shareholders of Mobile World which took place recently, the Chairman Nguyen Duc Tai affirmed that Mobile World only held less than 49% of the shares of An Khang drugstores and they were not “the leader” any more, but just the one to support as a large shareholder.
“Previously, we were planning to acquire 51% of the shares of An Khang drugstores to take the dominant shares and make it our subsidiary. After that, we assessed the risks and determined that that was not the appropriate time. Then we decided to negotiate to have 49% of the shares. Now we are not leading, but in case they need help, we will support them in case of strategies, marketing, etc. We just contribute as a role of a large shareholder”, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tai affirmed.
Many Vietnamese people often buy medicines at nearby drugstores, why do they have to visit a large chain?
“The current situation in fact that the drugstores are scattered everywhere, many people can go to a nearby stores to buy medicine. Then what advantages does Long Chau have to make the ambition of taking up 30% of the market share in the field of pharmacy come true?”, another question raised for the leader of FPT Retail.
Mrs. Diep explained: “The number of medicines in Long Chau is plentiful and variety. The quantity can be nearly 6 times larger than a normal drugstore. Therefore, the consumers will tend to bring the prescription to a store that has many kinds of medicines”.
Mrs. Diep also revealed that, only 60% of Long Chau’s revenue came from pharmacy, the remaining was from the functional foods, cosmetics and medical equipment, etc. These fields had a higher rate of revenue than the medicines.
At the end of 2017, FPT Shop reached the avenue of 13,147 billion VND, up 21.1% compared to 2016. The net profit reached 289,8 billion VND, up 39.7% compared to 2016 and took up 15.47% of the total revenue of the company.
In 2018, FPT Retail is planning to raise the revenue to 16,020 billion VND, up 22% compared to the same period and the net profit is expected to reach 377 billion VND, up 30% compared to the previous year.

The owner of FPT Shop chain is expecting to open 400 drugstores and take 30% of the market share after having engaging in the field of pharmacy for 4 years.
At the General Meeting of Shareholders taking place in the morning of March 28, Mrs. Nguyen Bach Diep – The General Director of FPT Digital Retail JSC (FPT Retail), for the first time, openly shared the plan to develop the field of pharmacy after one year of silent deployment.
The leader of FPT Retail said that there are many indicators which can prove that the field of pharmacy is very potential. Firstly, the market scale is about 5 billion USD, which is equivalent to that of mobile phones and higher than that of electrical machines and laptops. Secondly, this field does not depend on the economic situation so the annual growth always remains at double-digit. Thirdly, Vietnamese people’s spending on pharmacy is about 30 USD per year, which is much lower than that of other countries in the area.
“If we step into an industry that has specific characteristics, we are likely to suffer a great loss. Therefore, the acquisition of Long Chau drugstore chain (HCM City) at the end of last year has helped the company minimize the risks”, Mrs. Diep said.
FPT Retail opened 5 more stores after the acquisition of Long Chau drugstore chain.
At the time when FPT Retail started to engage in pharmacy, Long Chau had only five stores with average monthly revenue of 136,000 USD. This number is 12 times higher than that of Pharmacity and 4 times higher than that of Phuc An Khang – a drugstore chain that has just been contributed by Mobile World.
Having taken over for one year, FPT Retail has raised its total number of drugstores to 10. The company has expected to open 30 more stores this year and will reach 400 stores over the next four years. Then, the company will take up about 30% of the pharmaceutical market share with the revenue of approximately 10,000 billion VND.
Explaining the reasons for switching to a new industry, Mrs. Diep said that despite the size of the scale, the mobile phone market is still growing at about 12% per year, the saturation can be seen more clearly, especially in terms of coverage area.
This year, FPT Retail has set a target of just more than 100 mobile phone shops. The net revenue is expected to be at 16,020 billion VND and is distributed quite in detail. Accordingly, the former store chains achieved 13,300 billion VND and 500 billion VND at first. The remaining came from the installment payment service by monthly salary, interest free for the customers who are the employees of FPT Retail buying mobile phones with network fee bonus.
Besides that, the company still focuses to deploy the store chains selling genuine Apple products with the aim to build high-end brand, save intermediate costs when being imported directly from Singapore.
The Board of Director of FPT Retail said that double-digit growth in the context of the mobile phone market which is showing signs of saturation is considered a big challenge. However, the company has negotiated with the suppliers to improve the profit margin, to take advantage of the scale of operational management to save fixed costs per store and to change the industry proportion. That is the reason why the company is still confident to stick to this plan.
FPT Retail has recently submitted its application for listing 40 million shares on Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange. This stock is scheduled to be officially listed at the end of April. In the OTC market, this stock is trading around 142,000 VND.
